As the year begins, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with a few friends and some clients, asking a simple question: How do you feel about the new year, and are you ready to get back to work?
You can probably imagine the responses.
Most people expressed fear about returning to work. Others were already counting down to the next holiday. The idea of reporting back to duty felt heavy, almost overwhelming. For some business owners, there was still comfort in leaving their businesses in the hands of managers and employees they entrusted during the holidays, with no urgency to fully resume control.
Yesterday, a colleague asked me an interesting question:
How do people do it? How do some people remain consistent, even when circumstances don’t seem to demand it? What keeps them going?
Ironically, I’ve asked myself that same question before.
One night, as I was driving late, I noticed a woman selling snacks well past midnight—at a time when most people were asleep. She had only a few random customers, mostly night travelers. Yet there she was, doing this every single night. Consistently.
That moment stayed with me.
What pushes someone to work when there seems to be no obvious reason? What drives people to show up even when the rewards aren’t immediate, when the environment is quiet, uncomfortable, or uncertain?
More importantly, what can push business owners—and later their employees—to develop that same level of consistency?
The answer lies deeper than motivation. It’s not about excitement, mood, or even pressure. It’s about purpose, responsibility, discipline, and sometimes necessity. Some people are driven by survival, others by vision. Some by commitment to their families, others by long-term goals they refuse to abandon.
Consistency is rarely accidental. It is built through mindset, systems, and clarity of why one does what they do—especially when no one is watching.
As we begin this year, perhaps the real question is not whether we are ready to work, but what is strong enough to keep us going when we don’t feel like it.
If you are a business owner—especially in the pharmaceutical or healthcare space—and you want to build consistency that goes beyond motivation, RentMyMBA is here to support you.
We work with business owners to design structures, systems, and strategies that keep businesses running steadily—through holidays, slow seasons, and growth phases.
